Costa Rica
Sloth - Bradypus variegates
When we returned to Costa Rica in 2011, we stayed primarily in Cahuita. The Sloth Sanctuary was only a short drive north. There were plenty of opportunities to take photographs of young sloths. Some were quite shy but there were some very young sloths quite curious. They had been brought to the sanctuary only recently and had little exposure to humans. If I recall correctly, they were brought to the sanctuary because their mother was found dead after accidentally electrocuting herself on a power line. But we heard other stories and reasons the sanctuary received sloths - as well as some common misconceptions about the species (Such as - they are not so "lazy" as you might think. We saw one moving pretty quickly up a tree once).
